IVR and Speech (ASR & TTS) Print E-mail

When it comes to enhanced services, Speech includes two technologies – Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-To-Speech (TTS). ASR is used for building speech-driven user interfaces and provides an efficient and intuitive spoken alternative to touch-tone (DTMF) applications. TTS enables the “reading” of a variety of dynamic sources – databases, e-mail programs, news reports, SMS, prompts – and converts it into natural-, human-sounding speech output, ideal for dynamic and rapidly changing content.

The OmniVox3D Application Server integrates several speech engines (Nuance, Loquendo, LumenVox) through the use of the MRCP (Media Resource Control Protocol) industry standard. MRCP can be used to control speech synthesizers and recognizers to provide speech recognition and to stream audio from a common location to a user and features a mechanism that provides same audio to both phone and web customer interfaces.

By offering ASR and TTS with OmniVox3D, Network Operators, Value Added Service Providers, and Value Added Resellers now have the flexibility to create a greater variety of speech-enabled services, including voice commerce, voice portals, voice activated dialing and directory assistance. To more quickly and efficiently Design, Develop and Deliver these speech-based services, users can utilize OmniVox3D’s browser-based OmniView Service Creation Environment, as well as standards-based VXML. Managing the entire platform is handled through the OmniView OAM&P Console.

Additionally, the flexibility of the ASR speech engine is fully maintained within OmniVox3D allowing application developers to take full advantage of features such as Confidence Ratings and N-Best results, which are returned from the speech engine up to the application management layer. Speech functionality is achieved by high-level programming of the Speech Commands/Icons available in OmniView, combined with the building of ASR speech grammars that contain the universe of words to be recognized at each specific speech utterance. Depending on capacity and network requirements, speech may be implemented in a centralized or distributed configuration.

The integration of the speech engines, combined with the stability, flexibility and powerful Service Creation Environment included in OmniVox3D provides application developers a rich feature set of functions allowing advanced application development. The provided technological features include:

  • Utterance recording detected by the speech recognition engines into a new file, or appending to an existing voice file.
  • Barge-in capability, allowing returning callers to interrupt prompt messages by speaking responses at any time during the call.
  • "N-Best results", returning the number of times a word or sentence detected in the utterance spoken, from Grammar file to the OmniVox3D application variables.
  • Confidence rating (%), informing the application of how accurate (as a percentage) it thinks the utterance matches what is configured in the Grammar files.
  • All results returned from the speech engines can be assigned to OmniVox3D application variables so as to be used further in the application and/or to be stored into a database or file.
