As a technology unique an inherent to GSM, USSD allows for high-speed communication between the user and an application. Services which are ideal for use with USSD are those that require interaction between the user and the application (interactive). These may include:
  • Self-Service Customer Care
  • Prepaid
  • Roaming Callback
  • Mobile Money Services
  • Account Balance/Recharge
  • Mobile Chat (m-chat)
  • Locations-Based Content Services
  • Menu-Based Interactive Information Services  
      - Pull: News, Weather, Movies, Sports, Stock
      - Push: Voting, Polling, Emergency Notification

  • Service Activation/Deactivation (i.e. VM, MMS, Roaming)

As a protocol built into the GSM standard transmitting information over the SS7 MAP signaling channels, USSD messages create a very fast, real-time, session-based communication which remains open, allowing a two-way exchange of a sequence of data, making USSD more responsive than services that use SMS (store-and-forward, transaction-oriented technology). Also, since USSD uses the elements of the core network and doesn’t require a SMS-C, it has the potential for further minimizing operating expenses.

The APEX Interactive USSD Response (IUR), based on the APEX Service Delivery Platform (APEX SDP) and its core component the OmniVox3D Application Server, delivers a host of benefits:
  • Addressing interactive self-service customer-care for the low ARPU subscriber base, with the option of Live Agent call back.

As USSD continues to grow, so will the type of services it can access, making Interactive USSD Response on the APEX SDP the ideal combination for Network Operators.
