USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) As a technology unique an inherent to GSM, USSD allows for high-speed communication between the user and an application. Services which are ideal for use with USSD are those that require interaction between the user and the application (interactive). These may include:

As a protocol built into the GSM standard transmitting information over the SS7 MAP signaling channels, USSD messages create a very fast, real-time, session-based communication which remains open, allowing a two-way exchange of a sequence of data, making USSD more responsive than services that use SMS (store-and-forward, transaction-oriented technology). Also, since USSD uses the elements of the core network and doesn’t require a SMS-C, it has the potential for further minimizing operating expenses.
